The TV season has returned in full force and what have I been doing? Watching TV on DVD and movies I’ve already seen. But they’re just so darn good! For the longest time I’d been meaning to watch Veronica Mars, a tv show just entering it’s 3rd season next week. The first season was on sale at Costco for a mere $17.99 so I couldn’t resist and picked it up.
I’ve been watching it non-stop ever since. I’d sit down for one episode and end up watching four. It’s smart, sharp, and daring. It’s well-written and unpredictable. If you don’t know anything about it, the first season is about a girl in high school. Her best friend was murdered about a year before the show begins and she and her father have both been driven to figure out what really happened. The whole first season has this murder mystery as an underlying current that creeps up at unexpected times. It’s awesome. And just a warning - if you don’t know anything about the show and want to watch it, don’t try to read up on it on the internet! It’ll give it away, and you really want to let everything unfold at it’s own pace.
I finished up watching the first season on Saturday and just couldn’t stand to wait another moment for season two. I ordered it on Amazon that day. Should be here early this week! I can’t wait. I hope to be able to catch up before the new season starts October 3rd. Of course, I’m just going to TiVo the series, so even if it takes me an extra week to catch up it’ll still be waiting there when I’m ready.
Next up, Serenity! It was airing on HBO in HD earlier today, so I recorded it, just in case I felt like watching. Then this evening I thought “Hey, let’s just see what it looks like in HD. I’ll just watch a few minutes, then turn the TV off.” Next thing I know it’s an hour later and I’m thinking “Eh, there’s only a little bit more anyways” and then it was 2 hours and done. That movie is good. The whole Firefly thing is good. I’m hoping they’re making enough money on DVD sales to at least make them consider another movie. That’s be lovely.
I like me the TV. Good stuff everywhere.

Ahh, and here I thought Kate and I were the only people watching Veronica! Heard that it’s the lowest rated show to ever be renewed… They’re hoping to gradually build another Buffy. Oh actually, Drew’s a fan as well. It’s the only show I’ve found were the pop references feel not even *slightly* stale, and that counts for a lot with me.
“It’s all fun and games till one of you gets my foot up your ass.”
i was instantly addicted as well - i watched all of season one in the course of a weekend last january. the truly unfortunate part was it was my friend’s dvd set - and i was staying at her house for what turned out to be an unexpected weekend visit. and i never got off the couch. i don’t think her spouse was too thrilled…
i just defended my ph.d. qualifying exams last friday, and i had season 2 waiting for me when i got home - so that (and Lost season 2) was how i celebrated my advance to candidacy!
I have generally tried not to evangelize (completely unsuccesfully) about the Veronica Mars thing, but I’m so glad you got into it. Best. Show. Ever. Season 2 kicks much ass, and they just put up the first episode of season 3 online. Now if it can only escaped getting Arrested Developmented we can all be happy.
Now that the new season is well under way, and we know what really sucks Studio 60 I feel comfortable recommending both Heroes and 30 Rock. Watch them and love them. That is all.
“Here’s some advice I wish I woulda got when I was your age: Live every week like it’s Shark Week.”
30 Rock? Really Dru? Say it ain’t so! I couldn’t even sit throug the pilot. Awful! But I agree that Heroes is good. And Studio 60 rocks, my friend. It is good.
Studio 60 is boring with, and I never thought I’d say this about an Aaron Sorkin show, lazy and tired writing. The intrigue isn’t intriguing and why have a dialogue between characters (although Matt and Danny are always gold together) when you can have people speechify about what a hackneyed cliched background they come from? A black guy from South Central who made good? Check. A stupid jock? We have one of those. How about a kind of open minded Christian so Aaron doesn’t take too much heat from the right? Tall order but we can make it happen. But we need some retarded hicks from the midwest too to retain our liberal bonafides, any of those kicking around? Sure, this is Hollywood. We get them by the case.
And of course the skits are so unfunny I find myself nostalgic for post-Ferrell SNL. Studio 60 might be one of the worst shows on tv, not because it is so bad (and it is really bad), but because it betrays so much talent and promise.
And 30 Rock is good and funny, pilot notwithstanding.
