Last night I was invited with some of my co-workers to pop on by Demiurge, another development house in Cambridge for a night of gaming. For the most part we played their UT mod, Clone Bandits, which is a lot of fun, but I’m pretty darn bad at. Let’s just say they might have had a bit of an advantage, considering they wrote the thing.
Oh, and I’m also pretty bad at FPS games in general.
There was also a lot of Guitar Hero played, which was cool, but they only had one controller, so we just sorta watched each other instead of getting the really awesome head-to-head experience. I’ve never played it multi, so I’m really curious to give it a try. Next time, I’ll have to bring my guitar controller to make it happen.
The Warcraft part of the evening came in pretty late, when we finally switched the PCs over to playing some Warcraft III. I’m a big RTS fan, but haven’t really played anything multiplayer except Empire Earth II in a long time (hey, when you work on a game, you play a whole lot of it!). I played through the Warcraft III campaign when the game first came out, and then didn’t pick it up again. So I know how to play the game in a general way, but anyone that knows the optimal strategies (or “strats” as my super-hardcore co-worker Albert calls them) will totally kick my ass.
So Albert gave me so pre-game coaching, told me to play the Night Elves and recommended a build order. I did a bit of exploring and found some stuff I recognized. The really cool thing was seeing how much of World of Warcraft comes from Warcraft RTS stuff! The icons for lots of stuff are exactly the same, there are units that cast the same spells (Druid units with Faerie Fire, Shamans with totems, etc). Of course it makes sense, since there is a large body of lore for the Warcraft realm, and it wasn’t all created explicitly for World of Warcraft, but when we were playing a match on a map called Booty Bay, it had extra meaning to me, since that’s a location I’ve visited in WoW.
I’ve been enjoying a short hiatus from WoW, and now I think I need to make sure to play some other games. There’s a lot more stuff out there that needs my time. Perhaps I’ll try the free Guild Wars trial this weekend.
